Modern and Majestic: Talk at Bayside Gallery

in August I delivered an evening talk at Bayside Gallery, Brighton (Melbourne) in conjunction with the National Gallery of Australia’s touring exhibition In Max Dupain and Ansel Adams: Search of Perfection.
This exhibition was conceived by my former National Gallery of Australia colleague Anne O’Hehir, Curator of Photography, who placed Max Dupain’s classically elegant black and white architectural photographs beside Adams’s majestic alpine and desert landscapes of the American West.
My talk focussed on a little museology on how they came to be in the National Gallery of Australia, which is to say how collections are made; some of the differences between Dupain and Adams as artists and as personalities on opposite sides of the Pacific; and a speculation on what each might have thought of their current joint show.
