NGV Photography exhibition

Not to be missed… Women Photographers 1900–1975: A Legacy of Light at the National Gallery of Victoria until 3 May 2026.
It is an impressive survey drawn solely from the permanent collection with over 300 works by 80 Australian and international photographers, of which 170 are new acquisitions. Quite a few labels credit wonderful local patrons who supported acquisitions for the exhibition.
(Three rare vintage photographs in the show still to be acquired are part of the 2026 NGV Summer Appeal, so there is an opportunity for anyone to contribute.)
The exhibition is a treat definitely worth multiple visits and with a substantial but modestly priced catalogue.
A special salute is due to the Bowness Family Foundation for acquisition and catalogue sponsorship among their many supports for photography and photographers in Victoria. Melbourne is richly served by photographic collections and has the Nation’s only dedicated Museum of Australian Photography at Wheelers Hill.
