Australie:  Re-constructed Vision

Festival d’Automne à Paris, Musée des Arts Africains et Océaniens,
28 September – 7 November 1983

Exhibition produced by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney,
in collaboration with the Australia Council.

RE-CONSTRUCTED VISION, contemporary works with photographs.

This exhibition was mounted in 1981; its aim was to record a new freedom of approach in contemporary photography. The most striking feature of the 100 works by 38 artists was that few of them looked like photographs! Every work involved some manipulation by the artist that significantly altered the naturalism with which photography is often associated.

The aim of the exhibition was to survey the different uses of photography in contemporary art, from photogravures, collages, screenprints and hand-printed photographs through to documentary photographs of performance.

Hand-printed or hand-coloured photographs, such as those of Warren Breninger, were shown alongside similar works etched by Peter Charuk. The documentary photographs of Mike Parr, one of Australia’s most important performance artists, appeared beside surrealist images created by the photographers Leonie Reisberg and Fiona Hall.

While the principal aim of the exhibition was to reveal the movement in Australia that was distancing itself from “normal” photography, it was also a challenge to the practice that tends to exclude photographers from exhibitions of contemporary art.

In the two years since the exhibition, the “manipulated photograph” has won its credentials in Australia.

Ten artists were selected to take part in “RE-CONSTRUCTED VISION” at the Festival d’Automne in Paris. With the exception of Mike Parr, nine of them work in the photographic field. For John Williams, Leonie Reisberg, Lynn Silverman and Fiona Hall, we have added a selection of their work since 1981 in order to show the evolution of their respective re-constructions of reality.
