James Jameson

Edinburgh circa 1866-84

Gael Newton AM

Part of series on works from our collections that have been re-homed and some favourites that will stay with me

I had been seeking a home for a carte de visit by James Jameson 50 North Pitt street, Edinburgh circa 1866-84 of an Indian nanny taken in in front of a rustic doorway with her two little British charges in sailor type suits.

Dealers and Scottish institutions had turned it down and I had assumed there would be no interested parties in Australia.

Unexpectedly found a perfect home for the JamesonĀ and two other images with ayah, with a project Ayahs and Amahs Transcolonial Servants in Australia and Britain 1780-1945 led by Professor Victoria Haskins, University of Newcastle.

Update:

There is more about the photo and family on Paul Frecker's website - The Library of Nineteenth Century Photography.  This includes information that the photo is of the photographer's family.
