The photograph album of the 1880s-1890s were often put together using images from various photographers. For example in Sydney it was not unusual to find images by Charles Bayliss, John Paine and other side by side in these albums. While sometimes the photographs were attributed, it was not always so.
Photographic studios and/or publishers would buy photographs from other photographers and publish them within a book of views.
Albums were sold by a studio who may have assembled the collection of photographs as a special presentation album. These were used for special occasions - often by dignitaries who presented them to their special visitors.
View albums assembled by studios were bought by travellers/ tourists or were purchased by locals for their own use including sending them back 'home' to relatives.
Other albums were put togther by collectors or travellers as special personal souvenirs. These souvenir albums included not only local photographs from an Australian city, but also photographs from other port cities that they had travelled through.
