Photographers
are listed alphabetically and an attempt has been made to list
their works chronologically by the date of the negative. The negative
date
is shown on the first line of captions beside the title. A date
for the particular print in this exhibition has been included on
the
second line with the dimensions and medium. The relation of negative
and print date of photographs can be very significant. Print
made even five years after the date of the negative can amount to
re-interpretations
in the print taste of a later style than that which was in vogue
when the negative was conceived and exposed.
An
asterisk in front of either the title or dates indicates that such
information was not inscribed on the print or mount but has been
arrived at with reference to other sources. Where possible sources
have been listed.
A
glossary is included for reference to the various printing processes
of the pictorial era. For convenience bromide print in this catalogue
refers to a silver bromide gelatine emulsion. Unless otherwise indicated
it can also be assumed that all bromide prints in the exhibition
conform to the prevailing taste of the time for matt surface, warm
i.e. brown-black tone images on ivory to rich cream paper. Due to
difficulties of identification it has not been possible to distinguish
between warm tones produced by direct development, re-development
or subsequent toning of the printing paper.
Dimensions
are in centimetres, height preceding width, and refer to the image
size. Sheet size (i.e. printing paper) is not given but inscriptions
are listed as being on sheet meaning the border round the image.
