David Moore (6 April 1927 – 23 January 2003) was one of Australia’s most influential photojournalists and documentary photographers, playing a pivotal role in establishing photography as a recognized visual art form in Australia across a career that spanned six decades.
Born in Sydney to architect and painter John D. Moore, he developed an early interest in the medium, gaining his foundational commercial training in Sydney advertising studios before working alongside legendary modernist photographer Max Dupain from 1948 to 1951.
Seeking international experience, Moore relocated to London in 1951, where he became the first Australian photojournalist to work consistently for major global picture magazines, contributing photo essays to premier publications such as Life, Look, The Observer, and Sports Illustrated while traveling across Europe, Africa, and North America.
During this period, his work was featured in Edward Steichen’s landmark 1955 Family of Man exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Upon returning to Sydney in 1958, Moore turned his lens to capturing a rapidly transforming post-war Australia, focusing his aesthetic on urban growth, industrialization, coastal landscapes, and social commentary.
Combining humanistic empathy with a sharp architectural sense of geometry and shadow, he produced some of the nation's most iconic imagery, including his early social-realist work Redfern Interior (1949), his extensive multi-year documentation of the Sydney Opera House under construction, and his defining 1966 photograph Migrants Arriving in Sydney.
Beyond his own practice, Moore was a crucial advocate for the photographic medium, co-founding the Australian Centre for Photography in Sydney in 1974 to provide a dedicated institutional platform for contemporary photographic art. His extensive archival legacy is represented in major national and international collections, including the National Gallery of Australia (Canberra) , the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Portrait Gallery (Canberra), The Museum of Australian Photography (Melbourne), and the Museum of Modern Art (New York).
