Mary Meyer and the frames for her paintings
Because Mary Meyer did not make a career through sales and exhibitions, not a lot of information is available about what style framing she used for her finished works at different periods through her long life as an artist. Given reported her lack of interest in sales, it could also be that only a few of her works were framed in the times when they were created.
We have looked at available framing in the hope that the frames may provide clues to date works, as Mary did not date her paintings.
Looking at works in recent auctions, it is looking as though some were framed at particular times well after they were created – maybe for an exhibition in her time or maybe after her death.
A recent Joel’s Auction had six works up for sale – all sold for a good price. There is a reasonable interest in her works. Two small works (Dr Felix Meyer and the Reflections) were unframed, one small work (T-Trees) was in a largish wooden frame, and the other three had the same frame style. The three frames looked as though they had been added recently – sometime in the last couple of decades.
Bendigo Art Gallery has five works acquired directly from the estate in 1976. Four of these look as though they are in the original frames from their time of creation. The other, The Red House which we date as maybe 1930s, looks as though it was framed later – possibly in the 1950s or 1960s. Interestingly, the back of the frame is very clean (almost brand new) with no signs that it has ever been hung – there are no hooks or signs of any hooks.
The Castlemaine Art Gallery and Museum had acquired four works from the estate in 1976. Three were later sold. The one remaining painting, Fishing, is in the same style as Bendigo’s Red House – being a sort of derivative of Max Meldrum in tone.
The Castlemaine work has the same style of framing as Bendigo’s Red House. The difference is that the Castlemaine work has definitely being hung for exhibition – with two sets of hooks on the back. One set of hooks look much later than the other. These may be hooks used by the Castlemaine Gallery
Other art institutions hold works by Mary Meyer. Those that we have been able to identify are the National Gallery of Australia (six), the National Gallery of Victoria (one), Geelong Art Gallery (one) and Latrobe Art Gallery (two). There may be others, but online searches and a couple of direct inquiries have not identified more.
The following are listed online as sold in previous years. There are no images online for these works. Given the titles, several may have been sold again recently.
Spring (sold 1994), Through the Gardens (sold 1991), Portrait (sold 1988), Along the Yarra (sold 1984), Old House Heidelberg (sold 1984), Through the Ti-Tree (sold 1981), Carting the Hay (sold 1981), The Yarra (sold 1980), Landscape (sold 1977).
