Badger & Fox Gallery of Surrey Hills proudly presents the first commercial exhibition of 40 vintage photographs printed by Harold Cazneaux that have been released for sale by Cazneaux’s own grandchildren.
The remarkable exhibition offers the rare opportunity to own photographs conceived and printed by one of Australia’s most famous photographic artists. The retrospective includes archival prints from all phases of Cazneaux’s career from the 1900s to WW II.
Subjects include his earliest images of Sydney taken on his way to and from work, on weekend excursions in the 1905-20 and from his first one-man show in 1909. Also on the walls are the chic modern images from 1920 & 30s for 'The Home' magazine plus photos of the majestic landscapes from his great trip to the Flinders ranges in 1937.
Harold Cazneaux excelled at the romantic soft-focus imagery of turn of the century art photography and out of hours lovingly trawled the harbour and byways of ‘old Sydney’ and Surry Hills.
He also embraced the new taste for streamlined art deco styling and sun-filled overtly Australian imagery of the 1920s. Included in the exhibition is one very special photograph, Sun Spots and Shadows, representing his very special use of light on the young subject.
Cazneaux absorbed the dynamic geometry of 1930s modernism but not the angst and extreme formalism of his younger contemporary Max Dupain. The 1929 action photograph, Wheel of Youth, actually set a standard to be followed by later photographic artists.
Cazneaux is arguably the nation’s finest camera-artist of this era. His most famous image is a 1937 picture of an ancient gum in South Australia’s Flinders Ranges. The remarkable and very Australian photograph was patriotically renamed in 1941 as 'The Spirit of Endurance'.
The tree known as ‘The Cazneaux tree’ has survived and continues to be a major South Australian tourist destination. One of these rare prints is included for sale in the exhibition.
This special exhibition is to be launched by Gael Newton – the former Senior Curator of Photography at National Gallery of Australia and the original curator for the first Cazneaux retrospective at the Art Gallery of NSW in 1975.
